Old Woman at Prayer
Here is a humble lady communing with the Creator god. This print is based upon a painting by my guiding light, the German artist Paula Modersohn-Becker, completed around 1905/06. Paula painted reality with respect and tenderness, seeking simplicity and the essence of her subject. In her lifetime she had trod a lone path but soon others of great ability would walk the road she had pointed down.
This print is pulled from an engraving cut out of a sheet of rubber, a variation of letterpress. After removal of areas that are to be left as white paper, the rubber sheet is rolled up with ink and pressed to paper, producing the print. The technique does not accommodate reprinting, so the edition is forever fixed at 6 copies.
The image measures 5 x 7 inches, with a 2-½ inch margin all round and would fit straight into a 10 x 12 -inch frame.
