Artwork description:
'Out of clutter, find simplicity.' (Albert Einstein)
I painted this one on a very windy day in late winter. Luckily, however, I was able to find some shelter from the wind in the lee of a nearby Chateau while I worked on it.
All painting involves a level of simplification – or it should anyway. In painting a subject like this, it’s not just the tree that needs to be simplified, (I would go mad trying to paint in every leaf!) but also to unify the sky and the ground with colour produces a pleasing and unifying effect. I have been experimenting with the Zorn palette lately, and while I do not intend to adopt it per se, I have produced some very interesting little paintings with it, and variations thereof – in particular, I have added blues, as I believe he did also when painting landscapes.
