It does this through the juxtaposition of graphic styles, i.e. the figurative/three dimensional, and abstract/flat graphism. The objects depicted are themselves emblematic of the physical (the fruit, the nude) and the ideal or noetic (the decorative, arabesque elements, and the book showing geometric forms. The centaur was regarded in greek mythology as a liminal creature.
