Apart from providing the greatest technical challenge (especially when painting quickly and directly), portraits seem to me, more and more, to convey the essence of humanity in art. In other words, all that is possible. Just study some of Rembrandt's portraits, and one is left feeling that all other art is somehow superfluous. I know this is an outrageous statement but it's what I feel whenever I'm in front of a Rembrandt portrait.
This painting is subtitled 'Some prankish roguery'. I can't quite remember why but I think it relates to what was going on at the time.
The title could sum up my life, I often feel.
Spectrum oil paint, knives, paste medium
