The cat series began because my cats were bothering me, knocking things over, getting dust everywhere, and being a general nuisance. So I started watching them more carefully, and I loved how their ears convey mood, dominance, focus and attention. Cats can be somewhat otherworldly, they create the feeling that multiple perspectives are possible, so I paint their environment to reflect this. I’ve never known a cat to have nine lives, but a lot of the newspaper clippings in these collages are from WWII and other prominent historical time periods, because it seems to me possible that if they do have nine lives, they might remember other historical periods. I use oil paint, pastels, acrylic, and collage materials, but the works are sealed with UV protectant or varnish. This piece comes framed. It's on clayboard.
