The following series of six self portraits are designed to be viewed as 1 unit It comes from a recent period in which I lost a number of people dear to me. My sister in law, Mother in Law and most dear to me and heartbreaking my mother. Coming to terms with grief was suggested to me by fellow painter Phil Tyler who used landscape to come to terms with his grief.
The series of large Paintings for the large paintings contains the acronym MUM.
I first began a series of 6 small self portraits called mini me. Circular,Unilateral,Notations on Termination which if the "on" is left out contains another acronym.
The thought of painting 6 self portraits was suggested to me by an old anecdote about the superiority of sculpture over painting. concerning Giorgione and a Venetian sculptor.
The Sculptor asserted that Sculpture was superior to painting as it could be viewed from at least three different angles. Giorgione contested and painted a nude with several different mirrors in it showing that one painting could show one figure from many view points.
My paintings are both an attempt to withstand and endure grief and a solemn reminder that this self will one day pass away. And a nod to the classical Romans and Greeks "Vita Brevis Ars Longas" literally "Life is Brief but Art is Long" and now we know that even Art may pass away.
