Artist's description:

I explore the process of Melancholia and the relation between narcissism and melancholia that comes from the desire to ingest the departed loved-object, which is really a means of self-preservation.
By employing Sigmund Freud’s theory of melancholy from the myth of Narcissus, Freud recognizes and explains melancholia as a fundamental example of a narcissistic defense as “the idealized love-object is coveted as a mirror of the self” (Freud 1917, 249).
It is a state in which the subject forms identification with an (external) love-object that echoes parts of oneself. The individual becomes narcissistic as a way of projecting air confidence- arrogance in the eyes of others which is masked for self-doubt and pain.
As a medium of self-awareness, self-creation, and self-destruction, the mirror became the emergence of self-recognition as found in the “gaze of the other” and of the narcissistic doubling of one’s self. By using the broken mirror as a reflective examination into identity reformation through the process of deconstructing (breaking the mirror and removing the shards), and reconstructing (putting the shards back together again), the mirror became a tangible reflection of an existential crisis.
