Original artwork description:
Magnet is the largest piece in a series of four wheeled, tower sculptures that all relate to our obsession with objects and material possessions. Whereas the other works in the series dealt with revered or fetish materials, Magnet (being made of thousands of plastic toys) was supposed to express the disposable and worthless aspect of our consumer society.
Yet, ironically, this original intention became subverted when I soon found out that many of the toys are highly prized and sort after ‘collectables’. It was this discovery that led to the work being named Magnet. Not only does it attract a lot of attention from children and ‘souvenir hunters’ (who frequently steal pieces of it), but at its first exhibition four young boys actually managed to wheel it out of the gallery before the invigilator spotted them and retrieved it.
