Artist's description:

The model for this work had such a peaceful and calm presence during the session. She was wholly comfortable with her body and its beauty: something that is sadly rare in many women given the societal demands to confirm to a certain airbrushed ideal. She was so comfortable in her own skin, and that is inspiring in and of itself. The fresh rose she brought to wear in her hair was a splash of spring vibrancy on a grey Vancouver day.
In the painting, I was hoping to capture her calm and comfort. Like other works in my Humanist Icon series, I was hoping to surround her warm pastel figure with luminous gold leaf to raise her up to a kind of secular diety (as conflicted as that may sound).
This work is gilded on the wide gallery edges, so is intended to be hung unframed.

Materials used:

oil and gold leaf
