Artist's description:

This is Vidia. She was a beautiful young Indian girl who resided in an orphanage at Candolim, India. A friend of mine worked there and invited me a couple of times, over the Christmas period, to do some volunteer work. I took some pictures while i was there. Vidia had a lovely, slightly twisted little smile, but i could see sadness in her eyes! Im not sure at what age these girls where invited to leave, but i guessed she didnt have long left. I do hope that she is happy, but i tried to use her to represent the crueler side of life for some young children in developing countries, hence the name of the painting. Thick oil, applied with a knife, and heavily varnished.

Materials used:

Oil on canvas
