Mermaid Art:

All my fantasy illustrations seek to embody beauty and romanticism with the quirky and extraordinary.

As explained before in my profile and in my other fantasy illustrations, my eye for detail, my fascination with ethereality particularly beneath the waves and the imagery that I am able to conjure up has been prolific since childhood.

Gleaning inspiration from various organic and architectural structures such as Gothic Fan-vaulted cathedrals, mosques, onion domes to include works of art from artists such as Hieronimus Bosch, Bruegal, Escher, Leonora Carrington and Arthur Rackham, looking also at and observing the texture and structures of spiral, scallop and oyster sea shells and other types of marine life for which the mermaid motif is an ongoing integral part of each design I am able to create my very own wonderland.

LIMPET TOWER

"It was in a dream that I found myself in a remote, conical shaped tower in the middle of an ocean with the sea crashing through the many arched stone windows and doorways in an invigorating spray of aqua mist."

The “Limpet Tower” etching is the 10th in my series of mermaid illustrations, 7 of which are etchings. The structure of Limpet Tower is intended to look like a giant limpet shell with smaller limpets and barnacles clinging to its walls and is a home to a plethora of other sea creatures including mermaids and mermen. The mysterious “Tower of Babel” depicted in so many artist’s works (of which Bruegal is one) I have always found architecturally intriguing and enchanting is structurally similar to a limpet shell. With that in mind I decided to marry the two to create an aquatic hybrid.

Materials used:

etched zinc inked then pressed on Bread and Butter Paper
