Artist's description:

Wood engraving. This engraving belongs to a series of eight engravings depicting images inspired by the eight primary trigrams of the I Ching – the Chinese Book of Changes. Li represents the element of fire. When combined with each other, these trigrams produce the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching. The first three trigrams, K'an-Water, Li-Fire, Chien-Heaven, are made up from a selection of primal markings identified by American scholar, James Harrod, as intentional marking motifs characteristic of the very earliest engravings from the mid-Pleistocene between 200,000 and 600,000 years ago.

Materials used:

Endgrain wood block engraved and then printed on Zerkall paper
