It is 5pm and high summer during a record breaking heatwave and I want to make a landscape perspective that takes the eye through a park with wonderful tees dating from the 1780's (and before) when Capability Brown was commissioned by the owner, the 4th Duke of Marlborough, to design the gardens and estate grounds which had originally been a deer park here in Langley, South Bucks.
My goal was to paint a realistic but contemporary landscape using a palette of primaries - gamboge yellow, alizarine crimson, ultramarine and viridian: My painting is inspired by the colours, distorted shapes and textures of the trees lining the drive.
Paper, watercolours over graphite
