The Long Man of Wilmington in Sussex is a chalk figure of indeterminate age set in a natural bowl striped with contour lines. Who and why? While doodling a sketch I realised that what I was drawing was an elegant female figure with a pronounced waist and hips. I like the idea of a benign feminine presence on the South Downs surveying the walkers who go past, and I've set her amongst soft colours with flowing lines.
