The model that posed for this painting was one of several models hired for a painting workshop. The workshop was taught by one of my all time favorite contemporary impressionists, Carolyn Anderson. I feel that my enthusiasm at the opportunity to learn from such a master is reflected beautifully in this portrait. Some of my favorite paintings and painting inspirations came from this one-week workshop. It has had a profound impact on my style, painting techniques and approaches that I have embraced in my own creation process.
No artist lives in a vacuum. We glean inspiration from the qualities, beauty, and people we admire around us. Yet, I feel strongly that I must guard carefully not to aspire to paint like another. My father once comforted me while in a moment of frustration I longingly said, “I just wish I could paint like ___ [whichever artist I was crushing on at the moment]. His response surprised me, and has stayed with me. “You should only want to paint like you.” How right he is!
My assignment with this painting, as I understood it, was to catch the model’s expression as quickly as we could using thin, dry, expressive, brush strokes. The fewer brush strokes the better. I was so pleased with myself to discover, that indeed, I could paint quickly from life, maintain my unique mark or voice, while challenging myself to new techniques in application.
Due to the nature of this portrait I have discounted it far below the usual costs of my finished portraits. I feel she will make a beautiful addition to any home. Kerida exudes a sense of confidence, inner peace, juxtaposed with the appropriate angst that young women face in their new adulthood.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions! ~Tali
