Original artwork description:

Oil on canvas painting of a newly hatched chick and its former 'home'. I really enjoyed working on the fluffy and fuzzy textures of the downy feathers, as well as the eggshell's smoother, yet still textured outer surface. The numerous yellows which are usually taken for granted as being thought of as the color of a chick's feathers are not the only ones I saw as I painted this...some turquoise also appeared on its back.

As I was painting this, I felt that I needed to balance the composition, so I added some vibrant color to the shadows so they would not be lost in all the dark browns of the foreground and background. What drew me to the photo that I used for a reference, (which I found on Morguefile, taken by photographer "peachyqueen"), was all the great light that was cast on this very sweet subject as a result of it being backlit. Neither the background or the shell were part of the original composition of the photo, that was taken in a chicken coop. I fabricated the background and I also used a different reference photo for the egg shell.

This painting is sold unframed since it is painted on all sides, on a museum-profile gallery-wrap canvas, which has a 2-3/8 inch depth.

Materials used:

oil paint, linseed oil (painting medium)
