Encaustic painting, shadowbox framed, 17 x 17 x 2.5 inches
This piece came about after seeing the recent Eva Hesse documentary and visiting her old studio on the Bowery in New York City. I have liked Hesse's work since I first saw it, but seeing the film gave me a deeper understanding of who she was and what she was trying to accomplish. In this work I explored a more organic form than I have in my previous work, and the use of black oil paint mixed in with the encaustic medium gives the work an interesting texture, as well as reflections off the waxy surface.
