Painted with acrylics and waxed pastels on cotton, gallery wrapped canvas, with the painting continued around the sides. A few light layers of uv-filtering varnish is added at the end to protect the colors from light and the paint from dust.
Years ago, I attended FIT in New York in an accelerated one year degree program to study commercial art. As part of one class's assignment was a documentary design, meaning the design was to be inspired by a historical document. It just so happened (gotta love synchronicity) at that time I came across a first edition print of the Book Of Kells in a bookstore and took it home.
I spent many many hours looking at the amazing work in those pages. The colors and lines and whimsy around a spiritual document resonated strongly with me. My design at the time was painted on crinkled waxed masa, a buff colored rice paper, creating ragged lines in the wax on the masa, and when the paint was added to it, it ran a bit into the cracks, and so mimiced old manuscripts. I painted a striped design of winged cows and other creatures based on what I found in the Book of Kells and that design ended up being selected to represent my class in FIT's exhibit A Decade of Design.
Lately, I've been very attracted to the drawn ragged line of pastels on paint (and painted ragged lines too) sometimes using wax medium, sometimes texture build up from the paint itself to create that look I like. In adding the gold and bronze lines to this painting (and other in progress) I'm seeing a connection back to the Book of Kells and other illuminated manuscripts whose color and forms I love to look at.
No prints. Ever.
I do not license my paintings for reproduction as prints or in any other media, so the original you purchase from me remains the one and only in existence.
