Artist's description:

I remember as a boy seeing the old half timbered houses of Holborn printed on tins of tobacco that went by the same name. The pattern work of the timber and windows made a interesting subject to draw. This view is a fragment of the old medieval street in the form of the picturesque Staple Inn. This half timbered Inn gives an impression of High Holborn before the great fire and redevelopment in seventeenth century when it would have been lined with many similar buildings.
