Artist's description:

This is one of the paintings in my series showing historical Dutch heritage tulips.

Supplied by the Hortus Bulborum foundation in Holland which propagates heritage tulips, I planted the Lac van Rijn bulb in my garden in October 2017 and it grew into a beautiful tulip early in May this year. The blooms have a crown-like shape and are a beautiful deep burgundy on an ivory background.

The Lac van Rijn tulip was introduced in Holland in 1620 and featured in the tulipmanie/tulipmania financial crash in the 1630s - a single bulb was traded for enormous sums, such as a canal house in the city. [Wikipedia: a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for some bulbs of the recently introduced and fashionable tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then dramatically collapsed in February 1637].

The tulip is painted on wood using classical technique common in 17th Century Holland. As with the other paintings in this series, I celebrate the cultural heritage of the tulip - after all we all went crazy for tulips in 17th century Holland.

The frame is matt white lacquered wood.
This painting would look great in a living room, bedroom, library or hallway. It can be paired with my other historical tulip paintings (see picture & my other listings).

Materials used:

oil paint, wood
