This painting is the first of 8 paintings of Hamadryads - the nymphs who live in trees according to Greek legend. I am trying to complete one painting per week.
Karya (sometimes seen as 'Carya') is one of eight children from the marriage of Oxylus and Hamadryas as detailed in a rare Greek manuscript on banqueting called the Deipnosophistae of Athenaeus.
These mysterious nymphs inhabit the trees of the forest - and sadly when the tree dies so do they.
I have tried to capture the mystery and power of the tree nymph using a variety of cryptic methods.
Please remember that the Gods punish those who harm trees. If we didn’t have trees the planet would die and us with it.
I am trying to make the paintings dramatic and not just ‘pretty picture chocolate box art’
I hope you like the idea! Maybe you’d like to collect all eight!?
