Guardian of Knowledge – Reduction Linocut (2025) Linocut by Jennie Smallenbroek
50 x 70 x 2cm (framed) / 32 x 50cm (actual image size)
£502.54
Artwork description
Discover the profound spiritual presence of Guardian of Knowledge, an original reduction linocut depicting Jesus holding a spirit figure in his hands. Above him appear the words “Knowledge is within your heart,” while beneath his feet is the message “Do As I – Keep It Alive.”
The 23.5 × 41.5 cm image is printed on 32 × 50 cm, 400 gsm oil painting paper. The artwork was created with 16 individually printed layers of Caligo Safe Wash oil-based relief ink, resulting in remarkable depth, rich colour and a distinctive tactile surface.
Each impression is printed entirely by hand and has its own subtle variations. The reduction process involves carving more material from the same linoleum block before every new colour is applied. Because each stage is irreversible, the technique requires careful planning and precision.
More than two months were spent designing, carving and printing this artwork. Every layer was carefully developed to strengthen the spiritual symbolism and emotional presence of the image.
The work was created in my countryside studio in the Netherlands, surrounded by the sounds of sheep, horses and goats. This peaceful environment forms a quiet background to my creative process and continues to inspire the stillness and symbolism within my work.
