Artist's description:

Inspiration for Greek Virtue figure.
In teaching circles, this discussion between a teacher and a six year old child, who was painting, is well known:-
Teacher: What are you painting?
Child: God.
Teacher: No one knows what God looks like.
Child: You will in a minute!
I am trying to capture the honesty, confidence and insight young children often demonstrate.
These sculptures represent the Ancient Greek notions of Virtue, Honesty, Bravery, Justice, Humour, Beauty, Courage, Love, Satire, Harmony etc. The viewer makes the choice of which attribute/virtue goes with the individual sculpture. A single beautiful glaze emphases identity of the sculpture.
The sculptures are made with a direct honesty to the nature of the material. The work shows the way as it progresses into a finished piece. The hand becomes as important as the eye and the mind. I use white stoneware clay and make using slab and carving techniques. Natural and manufactured objects are used to make impressions and produce strong textures. The work is then fired between 1100 and 1200c in an electric kiln. Decorated with oxides, engobes and glazes. Each piece is hand built and unique (not moulded).
