Original artwork description:

Futility of War (2018), a large triptych on aluminium panels where landscapes from World War I are combined with images of war-torn Syria, the painting invites one to reflect on history, and the consequences of human-induced destruction. Exuding out of the panels are rusty pieces of metal swarf, which attempt to bring the smells and textures of the scenes depicted closer to the viewer.

Inspired by the reportage revealing the shocking inhumanity and destruction of cities such as Homs and Aleppo in Syria in the ongoing war.
Images of devastated forests from the battles of WW1 melded with the scenes from Syrian cities today.
Rust bleeds from the paintings/sculptures emanating from metal, debris, 'shrapnel' and swarf embedded on the artwork surface. #Syria #War #Kiefer

Materials used:

aluminium, rust, photo transparency, swarf, oils
