My attention is drawn to an outcrop of Foxgloves in a thicket of smallish Birch trees in the Bluebell Wood near my home. The late Spring sun, over my right shoulder, seems to highlight their colour in an otherwise monotone setting. The bark on the Silver Birch is magenta and purple contrasting the orange and gold of the forest floor etched with the debris of fallen leaves and branches. Bad weather prevents revisiting the site for many weeks and on my next visit the Foxgloves have all but disappeared and I'm left studying the formal arrangement of tree, leaf and branch…the Foxgloves will have to wait until next year.
