It took me a long time to come up with this version of flower power. I had this idea in my mind, to create a very colourful image, to empower people to choose to look at the bright side. I wanted a pop-art treatment of the image, because it was dedicated to everyone, and should be accessible to everyone. I took a photograph of a flower, a tulip which was so open it was about to wither. Because that is how fragile life and happiness is in general. You never know how long you can rely on it for, but if you set your mind to it, you can make it last longer. And I worked from there. It took me a year. There are a lot of variations to it, with different combinations of colour. And there is a touch of gold or silver pigment on the stamens or the pistil, because they represent the future, and how precious it is.
Turquoise is the New Black consist of 14 prints. Some of them have a black and white flower, like this one, some others have a yellow, pink, red or orange flower, so it is a varied edition. I have only 8 turquoise and white prints among the 14.
They look great by themselves, or as a set of two , three or four. In an exhibition I had ten of them together.
