Paper collage inspired by an original photograph taken by Melanie Ezra. Each collage is a physical reconstruction using tweezers and scalpel and is meticulously recreated in painstaking detail over the course of a week. Some of the tiny pieces used to recreate the photograph are no more than 0.1in (3mm) in size
This collage was based on a pinhole photograph of a flock of birds (a murmuration of starlings) over Margam Park in South Wales. The camera used was a digital camera built by the artist herself in order to create the abstract nature of this image. This is the first in a series of three based on the flight of birds and created in this way.
The deconstructed subject matter becomes almost irrelevant since it is the effect of the reconstruction that the viewer is inevitably drawn to. These remarkable narratives speak volumes as to the potential of the photograph.
