Living in Florida these birds are usually seen in flocks where their uniqueness can be lost. Their individuality inspires me to seek out the individual with a striking pose. Their necks wind round with incredible flexibility creating color and movement that begs to be captured in paint. The brightness of their feathers depends on their food and I love the stronger colors. The challenge in painting birds is to capture the movement and complexity of the feathers. I painted this flamingo with artist quality water paints on 300 pound Windsor Newton watercolor paper. This is a very heavy professional grade paper. The edges are traditionally deliberately torn rather than clean cut. This adds to the texture and character of the paper. This painting does not need a mat frame to cover the edges.
