I visit Northumberland often: I'm drawn to the barren, rugged beauty of the county, with its infinite sky and low horizons. One of my favourite places is a stretch of walkway between Warkworth and Alnmouth in Northumberland. It’s nothing special: it’s just a dirt track, but it leads to a beautiful 2-3 mile walk to the coastal town of Alnmouth with the coast always in sight, and rolling fields with huge skies.
What attracted me to paint this particular spot in July 2011, was the way the tractor wheels had carved their way into the beautiful field of wheat and I wanted to record the impermanence of the scarred landscape as the field was ripe for harvest.
As I was painting, the rainclouds moved and which forced me to stop the painting earlier than I had planned, and I was always glad that happened as it felt more unplanned — which I felt counterbalanced the more ‘linear’ tractor furrows.
