This painting is in heightened colour to emphasise the Cape vineyards once the vines have been pulled and the farm prepared for the planting of new vines in the Spring. I always look for these fields that are cleared every few years as they provide an uninterrupted view of the Hottentot-Holland Mountain range. This view captures the back of the Helderberg (Translation: Shining / Clear Mountain) from the Cape Town side of the wine lands. The colours in this work are warm and hold the granites in the mountains and richness of these Autumn months with the Winter announcing its arrival with skies heavy with rain.
