‘Face I’ 2013
Mixed Media and Acrylic on paper
This painting was created in the days following ‘Fingerprints’. I was still very much focused on my research about identity and my painting process was continuing to be very subconscious and spontaneous. However I began experimenting with different paper sizes and different colour tones. I wanted to create a greater sense of intimacy with the smaller abstractions. I was using my portrait photography piece as my first hand source for the paintings, but ultimately these paintings became completely autonomous. The traditional portrait was very much reduced to portray the fundamental elements of a painting, including colour, composition and texture and tones.
However the main concept and starting point of these paintings remained my research on identity and how easily we can change our image and immediately take on a whole new identity. At first I believed identity was about physical appearance, and ethic background etc. however in the end I began to think that we construct our own identity and be anything we wanted to be.
