Artist's description:

The work is a process of sanding the surface and prepping the edges and back of the piece. I first look for patterns in the grain and knots and use them to direct me as to how the design should be laid out. The design is sketched onto the wood and then areas of carving are decided upon. Once this is done, using a number of techniques, the wood is carved, usually about 1 to 2 cm in depth. The areas that have been carved are then sanded, the next step involves painting the design with acrylic paint. Once the surfaces are painted the depressed areas are given any where between 3 and 6 layers of acrylic high gloss varnish. I often will varnish the edges of bark as well.

Materials used:

Acrylic paint, varnish, driftwood and shale stone
