Artist's description:

This portrait of my wife is a turning point in my work for several different reasons. First, because it is a baroque-inspired piece, influenced by the tenebrist paintings of Rembrandt, and perhaps some other more nineteenth-century artists, such as George Hendrick Breitner. But it's also a departure from painting from observation. As I learned classical painting by mastercopying (copying from another classical work), I began thinking that working from life, or from photo, or even from a study is still a 'copy.' This painting however, uses no references, and was done strictly by gazing at the canvas, and allowing my wife's face to appear and develop on the panel.
