A prime example of my work with "layers," Durch—German for "through"—consists of several layers of encaustic medium (wax) mixed with oil paints and other materials. The upper layers were partially removed with sculpting tools to reveal the layers beneath. We can therefore look "through" the topmost blue layer to catch a glimpse of what is happening further back.
This kind of "crossover" work—somewhere between painting and sculpture—is very important to me, as I do not see 2D & 3D art as black and white, but as a rich gray area with "graydations."
