"This Fist" is a monument to boxer Joe Louis in downtown Detroit. Most don't know the meaning behind the sculpture, and many think it to be belligerent and "in your face." In fact, it represents the power of Joe Louis's punch both inside and outside the ring. Because of his efforts to fight Jim Crow laws, the fist was symbolically aimed toward racial injustice.
I took this photograph early on an autumn Sunday morning in 2015. As the sun was rising, the city was slowly coming to life with people walking and jogging along the streets.
