Artist's description:

This scene is of a desert wash in Arizona, north of Quartzsite. The sun was beginning to go down behind me and the foreground was quickly swallowed in shadow as I worked providing an opportunity for contrast in light and color. Because the pupil of the eye outdoors contracts when focused on bright light and dilates on shadowed areas, it was necessary to accentuate the deep values in the foreground trees and sandy wash. Without this contrast adjustment, the painting would have lacked interest and depth.

Materials used:

Oil paint on gessoed whiteboard
