Interested in the ephemeral aspect of conscious reality as a metaphor for the unseen or unconscious worlds, Esther Hoflick finds the unanswerable question of existence to be omnipresent. Motivated by a desire to investigate this unknown, landscape is used as a lens with which to study the relationship between conscious and unconscious worlds.
Coming from the belief that the unconscious is accessible through dream imagery, she often uses images from her dreams attempting to evoke the sensation of an unseen reality. By combining mediums, she has a vast range of possibilities with which to work. The layering of multiple textures parallels the ambiguity of human perception. She creates images that combine representative landscape with abstraction. Working methodologically and instinctively, her process weaves imagery through an intuitive response to the materials. While investigating the mystery of existence, there is an importance given to the portrayal of beauty that she feels is embodied by this eternally impossible question.
