Artwork description:

My series explores both the human contemplation of and disregard for the universe beyond earth. Since my youth, I have been fascinated by the night sky. As an adult, I realize that many do not have the luxury of taking the time or effort to consider more than basic survival, or even to witness the night sky devoid of light pollution. Others, however, are focused on self, money, and material possessions. The worlds they have created for themselves are such that contemplation beyond their own entertainment and material possessions does not come to pass.

The Circus Tent photomontage represents people who may have the time and means to think beyond their own worlds, but do not do so because they are focused on self, material possessions, or in this case, entertainment.

I photographed the constellation Cassiopeia and chose to use it consistently throughout the series because, according to myth, it represents human vanity. One is not often open to contemplating much beyond the self when only focused on his or her own appearance or abilities. For those who do have the interest in and access to the night sky, Cassiopeia is easily recognizable.

Whether one contemplates or disregards the universe beyond, it is there always. I have tried to convey this here by using the darkest night sky against daylight - brightened objects in the foreground.
