Artwork description:

A linocut design initially inspired by a vintage poster I saw in the Geoffrey Museum, East London, which had circular shapes, each with a different image inside (Victorian, I think).
My recent linocuts have evolved from collages I made using bits of wallpaper, magazine images and postcards cut up to create new designs. I love 1930's and mid century design and hope these have that vibe too. This one has part of a bird and butterfly as well as natural forms.
It is a reduction print which means I print the first colour and then I re-carve the lino and overprint with another colour. In this print I printed a rectangle of uncarved lino in graduated orange first before printing with the carved lino in orange and then I re-carved and overprinted in teal-green. I like experimenting with layers of colours, often printed in blocks like here and this process means that all my prints are slightly different.
The colours are quite intuitive, probably stemming from a love of Mexican, Cuban, African and Indian art and textiles. I love rich colour combinations such as the dark green and orange-reds here.
This print could be hung alone or as part of a series, see my other linocuts in my circles series.

Materials used:

water based printing inks on paper
