This is a painting of a black rhino, photographed by my friends Dave Line and Kylie Carter at an elephant orphanage in Nairobi in 2001. I have painted her instead in a garden in the dusk, curiously looking at a magnolia flower and deciding whether to take a bite.
At the time I started painting her in March this year, magnolias were flowering everywhere. The one in the painting I photographed at RHS Wisley.
I called her Chula initially because that was the name that came to me when I began painting her. Later I found out it means 'darling' or 'beautiful'.
