This is the first of the abstract paintings where I have used a "squared-up" grid as an underlying structure for free brush work instead of a physical break in the surface (a pair of canvases stuck together). I wanted the marks that I made over the linear grid to affirm and also hide the symmetrical structure I began with. I painted it in December 2025, and as the picture came to a formal conclusion I realised that it was reminding me strongly of a Christmas tree. From then on, I struggled to retain the "objective" abstract mindset with which I had started out. Allowing suggestions of a star motif, branches and baubles to emerge and and stay in the composition was the final step to the title!
