Artist's description:

Looking out across the estuary sands at Sandside near what was the only Westmorland port of Milnthorpe. It is hard now to imagine ships travelling up this part of the estuary to unload when the water is now so shallow. Even though the roads still flood during high tide the advent of the railway and the viaduct bridge at Arnside in 1858 meant that this area could no longer be dredged and so quickly silted up. It is a beautiful area and it is possible to walk out onto the sands - but with quicksands all round and a very fast tide coming in from Morecambe Bay it makes it extremely treacherous.

This painting is complete with a beautifully handmade ash frame - hand-painted with white clay paint sanded back to provide the rustic finish. Signed by me on the reverse this painting is stringed and ready to hang.
