Artwork description:

My "Celestial Sea Spirals" (window mounted only) etching is the 8th in a series of mermaid illustrations which reflects my ongoing obsession with the sea and anything that poets and artists such as William Blake would describe as "The Divine Imaginatiion".

It explores architecture and natural organic forms particularly spiral staircases, spiral shells, the universe, infinity and the unconscious. Nature in evolution is an eternal pattern of chaos (fractal). The extraordinary life beneath the sea that has fascinated me or so long is a primordial soup from which complex myriad organisms are formed by the dynamical forces of flowing water. The spiralling coral in the foreground is in fact an ever expanding type of cauliflower. The cauliflower is a fractal which arranges it's florets in self similar scales. self-similarity in this case is a pattern left behind by the dynamical process of growth as it filled the space between dimensions.

Line etching and burnished aquatint: Oil based ink on Somerset Paper, tweaked here and there with a little watercolour and coloured pen.
