Archaeologist John Waterhouse said that Castlerigg Stone circle near Keswick was one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain and if you take the time to visit you will see why. I love this place - the atmosphere is electric and you can almost feel the history in the area.
Every year, thousands of tourists travel to the site, making it the most visited stone circle in Cumbria but don't let that put you of. The plateau that the stone circle is built on forms the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells and from within the circle it is possible to see some of the highest peaks in Cumbria. It is impressive to say the least!
