Question for the artist?

Artist's description:

Casares 4' is from a series of new works inspired by the village of Casares in Andalucia (where I was in residence earlier this year).

Casares is a village of contrasts – luminous whitewashed houses cling to the hillside against a backdrop of dark, rain-drenched mountains - The Serrania de Ronda.

The series explores the vivid landscape, architecture and flora of the village, reflecting the mood of its turbulent history and past conflicts between North Africa, Rome and Spain.

The visual focus of the Casares is the Christian church at the top of the hill, next to the remains of a crumbling Arab fort from the 13th century. As you walk up through the steep, narrow cobbled streets the scent of exotic flowers adds to the paradisical atmosphere. All around is silent, except for the sound of church bells and singing swifts that swoop around the village.

Looking up, you'll often spot two eagles circling above the village - they fly down from their nesting site in the surrounding mountains. As you walk, light flits from light to dark as clouds sweep across the valley, often bringing a mist of light rain that makes the white houses glisten.
