Events in places near and far over the past few years have filled news outlets with images of strife and menace, both natural and man-made. Just as a volcano might inspire awe, so occasionally, if taken out of context, some of these images offer a strange abstract beauty as I found when I painted several views of the flooding in Somerset, close to where I grew up. In this painting, hard floodlight in a calm bit foggy evening silhouettes figures scurrying across railway tracks, with soft hues of pink and blue. I found the image irresistible, and painted the scene from the memory of a few seconds footage on a tv screen, employing many light washes, contrasting with dark voids.
