Artist's description:

This is an 30” square encaustic painting done on nine 10” panels. The piece is highly textured and bold. The black pigment is made from powdered graphite mixed with wax and damar. In the places where there is no black paint, the raw pine panels are exposed.

This piece is mounted in a simple pine exhibition frame and ready to hang.

Encaustic paint is made from a combination of beeswax, pigment, and damar, and is worked by heating and melting the materials. Encaustic paintings are very durable (examples remain from ancient Egypt) but they are susceptible to high temperatures, so they should not be hung in a place which may get excessively hot (in direct sunlight, near a radiator, or fireplace).
