Buddha Cat is a very personal art work for me. This piece was my fi rst Buddha animal and was based on my cat Diego Rivera. Diego, a black stray I had rescued in Tempe, Arizona, was hit by a car on October 31, 2009. I was devistated by Diego’s death. He was my baby. This print was made to honor his life, love and friendship. Diego was a very sentient being, and this print is my way of honoring him. I have done this image many times and in many di fferent mediums. Repeating this image has been a meditation, o ering and prayer to Diego. The Wheel of Life is represented behind the image of the cat. In Buddhist philosophy, all beings are reincarnated over and over again on the Wheel of Life. There are many realms which we go through: the human realm, the realm of the gods, the warrior or demigod realm, the animal realm, the realm of the hungry ghosts and the hell realm. My hope for him is that he will evolve into a better place in the Wheel of Life since the animal real is one of the lower realms, along with hell and the realm of the hungry ghosts.
