What made this scene so attractive to me was the sculptural quality of those giant stones, the richness of their hues accented by the low sun rays … and the sea at twilight framing it all.
In preparing the painting surface I tried to suggest the volume and texture of the stones by adding a thick layer of priming material following the contours. This, together with the lights and shadows created by the low sun, provides depth and results in a powerful image of this remarkable scenery.
