Artwork description
At the North End of Temperate House, in Kew Gardens, is a place called Cherry Walk. Lined with Japanese Yoshino cherry trees and underplanted with hundreds of tulips, a taste of Japan in spring comes to London.
On a bright spring morning when the sky is a bright clear blue, the grass the vivid green of new growth and the many pinks in the trees and reflected in the tulips below, I knew these are the colours that excite me.
This was a tricky print— transparent layers were used for the windows in the glass house and jumping from one set of vivid colours to another was difficult using the reduction linocut technique. This means only five prints are available in this edition— a real exclusive!
This piece is entirely made by hand using the reduction linocut technique. One block is repeatedly carved and printed entirely by hand to slowly build the image. Once the image has been created, no more can be reproduced. Everything is done entirely by human hand.
In this piece the printed area is 40.5cm wide and 30.5cm long. The paper measures 46.5cm wide and 36.5 cm long. It is printed using artist-quality oil-based Caligo inks and is printed on heavyweight Italian printing paper.
Materials used:
lino, cutting tools, roller, inks, printing press, paper
